Black Lives Matter

In the days and weeks following the murder of George Floyd, I watched as people took to the streets of cities all across America and the world proclaiming Black Lives Matter, and I shared in their anger and outrage. When I posted a Black Screen on my social media accounts on Black Out Tuesday w/ the words Black Lives Matter, I was shocked at how many people came at me and criticized the post and felt the need to say, “All Lives Matter.” I couldn’t believe how quick people were to politicize those three words, and I took it as veiled racism or outright denial of what is happening in our society.

It dawned on me that everyone needs to accept and say, Black Lives Matter, first to themselves and then proclaim it out loud to the world so that we can all begin to heal and move forward. I woke up the next morning, and I wrote the words to this song.

Black Lives Matter.

Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to come to terms
Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to say those three words
Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to give it up
Sooner or later
Enough will be enough

Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to confess
Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to address this mess
Sooner or later
You’ll have to let go of your pride
Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to change your mind

That’s when you’ll learn
It ain’t about you
That’s when you’re gonna realize
We’ve all got work to do
So why wait?

Sooner or later
You’ll have to recognize
Sooner or later
This won’t be politicized
Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to seek the truth
Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to dig up those roots

That’s when you’re gonna learn
It ain’t about you
That’s when you’ll realize
We’ve all got work to do
So why wait?

Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to shrug that weight
Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to stop the hate
Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to come to terms
Sooner or later
You’re gonna have to say those three words

That’s when you’ll learn
It ain’t about you
That’s when you’ll realize
We’ve all got work to do
So why wait?

There’s no better time than now
There’s no better time than now
There’s no better time than now
There’s no better time than now
